Pool service software compared

Skimmer vs Pool Brain: which fits your pool business?

Skimmer and Pool Brain are both all-in-one platforms for running a pool service company: routes, service records, invoicing and customer messages. The clearest difference is how they charge. Skimmer prices per pool you service, with unlimited technicians. Pool Brain prices per field technician, with unlimited office users.

That one difference decides the cheaper option for most companies. A tech who services 80 pools costs the same on Pool Brain as a tech who services 30; on Skimmer the bill follows the pool count. So dense routes favour per-technician pricing, and light routes favour per-pool pricing.

We make Lapsheet, a route app for the tech in the truck, so we compete with a small part of what these two do. We took every price and feature below from their own public pages in October 2026 and have not used either in a live business. Treat this as a map of what each company says about itself, and confirm on their sites before you buy.

Which one fits whom

Skimmer: paying by the poolGetting Started is $1 a month per serviced location, from $49 a month, for companies with up to 49 pools. Scaling Up is $2 per location, from $98 a month. Technicians and office users are unlimited on both.
Pool Brain: paying by the technicianThe pricing page prices by active field technician ($65 per technician in its calculator) with unlimited office users, and says every feature is included with free setup.
Skimmer leans toward growth toolsIts add-ons include a marketing suite, bookkeeping and an AI phone line, and its higher plan adds quotes, job management and consumer financing.
Pool Brain leans toward field controlIt describes guided workflows where tasks cannot be skipped, automatic chemical dosing from the tech's readings, and alerts for chemicals, flow, leaks, time and cost.
Both assume you want the back officeInvoicing, customer records and service emails are the core of each product. If you bill another way and do not need them, you are paying for a platform to get a route.
Neither: a route-only appFor one truck, or a few techs who only need the day's stops in order, a route app does the job. Lapsheet is free for up to 20 stops and $7.99 a month flat after that.

Skimmer vs Pool Brain: common questions

Is Skimmer or Pool Brain cheaper?

It depends on how your business is shaped, because they charge for different things. Skimmer's published pricing is per serviced location: $1 a month per pool on Getting Started (from $49 a month) and $2 a month per pool on Scaling Up (from $98 a month), with unlimited technicians. Pool Brain's pricing page prices by active field technician ($65 per technician in its calculator) with unlimited office users. A company with many pools per technician usually pays less on per-technician pricing; a company with few pools per technician usually pays less per pool. Check both pricing pages before deciding, since prices change.

Which one has route optimization?

Both do. On Skimmer, the Getting Started plan lists a Route Builder and the Scaling Up plan lists Route Optimization. Pool Brain lists one-click route optimization with drag and drop among its features, and its pricing page says all features are included.

Do Skimmer and Pool Brain have free trials?

At the time of writing, Skimmer advertises the first month free on its Scaling Up plan and Pool Brain advertises a 30-day free trial. Neither advertises a free tier you can stay on.

I am a one-truck operator. Do I need either?

Only if you want the office side: invoicing, customer records, service emails, chemical tracking. Both are built to run a pool service business. If all you need is today's stops in a sensible order on your phone, a route-only app is enough. Lapsheet is one: free for up to 20 stops, then a flat $7.99 a month for the company, on iPhone and iPad only.

Can I run a route app alongside Skimmer or Pool Brain?

Yes. Some techs keep the platform for billing and records and use a simpler route app for the day's driving. Lapsheet does not import from either platform, so you would add your stops by hand.

Who wrote this comparison?

Lapsheet, which makes a pool route app and therefore competes with part of what both products do. The prices and features here were taken from each company's own public pricing and feature pages in October 2026. We have not run either product in a live business.
